Diski update

May 16, 2010 · Posted in Cape Town, great service, world cup · Comment

Sometimes it works, having a big mouth and cheeky ideas. I suggested to my Virgin Active club that they should jump in with a bit of World Cup fever and get someone to give diski lessons to gym members. Lo and behold, at Hip Hop this morning the group exercise coordinator (no kidding, that’s her title) told me that she had indeed taken my idea and run with it. So, on Wednesday, at 18.15 I am going to gym to learn a few diski moves. I have to say, it’s the most impressed I’ve been with my gym, ever. That’s called listening and acting. And I think it is great that they’re buying in to the World Cup in such a simple, feel good way. Viva Virgin Active. See you for diski on Wednesday.

100 days to go!

It’s a hundred days to go to the soccer world cup! I am sure that all of you want to know why I am even mentioning this, and why I even care, and you would ask if you could see me why I am wearing my ‘I heart SA’ T-shirt with the SA flag on it today.

Well, I have to say, I have been turned around on this SWC thing. In the beginning I was omigod! WTF? I’m going to a desert island. At the time I could think of nothing worse than Cape Town, and South Africa being swamped by a bunch of rowdy foreign soccer thugs, who would be overcharged, under entertained, over liquified, under transported and in my face. In the beginning I was the stereotype of a DWP (depressed white pessimist) that believed nothing would be ready, nobody would come and the SABC would screw it up royally (that part might still come true).

But my involvement with the Engen Phambili road show has changed all that. I have been working with Engen for the past six years, creating industrial theatre plays as part of the road shows that go all over the country and are aimed at Engen petrol pump attendants  and cashiers. It is work that I am so proud of and committed to. It is also the most effective work I make. But while my cast of brilliant actors and I have been working at delivering a message of giving great service, pride, loyalty, energy, enthusiasm and enjoyment, I have been learning about the world cup, the way soccer brings people together, the love of the game, the excitement ordinary people feel, and they way that Engen feels about this once in a life time opportunity for South Africa to shine! It’s rubbed off. I am feeling it. Marks Maponyane and Clive Barker do a Q & A around the SWC and they are absolutely inspirational. The audience of petrol pump attendants and cashiers know their soccer, their players, the participating countries, their favourites to win. World cup tickets are cherished and fought over prizes! The South African national anthem is sung with enthusiasm, passion and commitment. I’m in! Boots and all! Woza 2010 soccer world cup! A hundred days to go!

got it

The final word. I went to Pinelands and got my very own, pure silicone, totally locally made, very reasonably priced MPower cup, and as luck would have it, I needed it today. Well, there are no gory details. I followed the instructions and Bob’s your auntie. No more tampons, or as Big Friendly says, plugs, or pads, or as Big Friendly says, surfboards, for me ever again. I have added MPower to my blogroll too, so ladies, that’s where to go to get it! As you can imagine, Big Friendly is fascinated!

Mpower at last!

product-box-cup2 So I went on a bit of a mission after getting my knickers in a menstrual cup knot and I have success at last. I have found a local company, mpower, who is exactly who I want to do business with. Firstly, I got a most speedy reply to my email from Glenda, the owner. Secondly, she has stock, which is more than I can say for the other company, and some of the sex shops who claim to have menstrual cups. Most importantly, she is not ripping us off. Her mpower cups are almost half the price of the others, the ones who have no stock! What is more, I can go off, fetch it from her and pay cash, tomorrow. No messing about with post and shipping and other nonsense. Check out the website to read about the product and team. Now it’s a case of helping to spread the word that this is where to go to get your environmentally friendly, cheap, long lasting mpower menstrual cup! Gotta love the interweb.

Big Friendly makes me a Lucky Lady Guy

This is a most important post. It is where I honour and acknowledge Big Friendly and his genius on the interweb. How beautiful is my new, custom made, specially designed and sexy blog? I think it looks great. I have been to visit it a hundred times just to look at the gorgeous random images of my ‘peeps’ and animals. I am very lucky. Big Friendly has made me a blog that is user friendly, simple, pretty and special. And I haven’t a clue how he does it. Big Friendly is going to be offering packages of blog/website things for all sorts of people like me, who want it, but don’t know what the hell they’re doing. Yay.

Five star service at Reeds Delta

This is the opposite of a moan in, and it’s also a response to Chris Roper’s latest news24 column about the completely sucky service he has had from Jeep and his ongoing problems with his car.

I bought my Opel Corsa second hand last year, but it’s still the newest car I’ve owned. The 3 year warrantee expired in June (without me remembering) but two weeks ago there were two niggling things with the car that were playing on my mind, so I decided to take it to the authorised official guys to check out. My heart was in my mouth. I have only heard how expensive it is to take your car to the main guys.

The whole experience made me scared. You book your car to go in. When you arrive your car gets a special number on its roof before anything, and it is checked out. Then you check in; with the desk person assigned to your car. He tells you how it’s going to work and that he’ll phone you when they know what’s wrong and how much it will cost.

Late that afternoon (we were in Jozi actually) I got an sms saying I could pick the car up the following Monday. I had told Sean we were going to Jozi for the weekend, so he remembered that I would only be collecting the car on the Monday. I was a bit freaked out though and called Sean, full of attitude. “Why didn’t you call me to tell me how much it’s going to cost?”, I barked. “Megan, I thought it would be ok, since there was nothing wrong with your brakes, they were just dirty so we cleaned them, and the funny noise in front was your air conditioner pipe, which we tightened.” I thanked him and hung up.

The following Monday we went straight from the airport to collect the car. Big Friendly dropped me off and I went inside to settle up. Sean made me sign the paper. They had charged me absolutely zero, nix, nada. It’s the first time a garage has ever been honest with me. I can’t tell you how comfortable I feel, taking my car back to them. Bravo Reeds Delta.
