Megan's Head

A place where Megan gets off her head.

I really, really want to start recycling properly. I get depressed every time I remove anything organic (even organic, organic) from a cellophane or plastic wrapper, in a plastic punnet, with a sticky label and a cardboard outside label. Woolies are the worst for over packaging their stuff! I am definitely going to buy a worm farm for the wet stuff, but it’s all the other recyclables I need a solution for.

I make a half-hearted attempt to take our glass to the school drop-off up the road, and I usually leave our newspapers outside for the pre-garbage collectors, who I think get some money for paper and cardboard. But that’s it.

So when I heard about my friend’s whole block getting recycle aware I decided to contact Think Twice. Unfortunately, they only do the Atlantic Seaboard. And I am back where I started. I can’t find someone to come and fetch my stuff, nor somewhere to drop everything off. This place does glass; that place does paper, still looking for plastic, cans, etc.

Is anyone managing this better than me in my neck of the woods, Woodstock?

  1. Think Twice is bloody brilliant and everyone must nag nag nag them to spread their wings further than the Atlantic Seaboard. In the meantime, while they’re still only thinking once about Woodstock, the best place (that seems to do the biggest range of stuff that you can drop off in one place) seems to be Oasis in Lansdowne road. Here they tell you what they do and don’t do:
You just get a few big plastic containers, separate out your plastics, glass, cans and paper, and every week or other week, drop it off at their Lansdowne road depot. Coimbra have this great coffee shop and bakery up the road (sorry, I always find I need therapeutic retail opportunities to help massage me into acts of social responsibility), and the discount bookshop on the corner of Belvedere and Keurboom roads near there is also worth a look.

Can’t vouch for them as I am also a Think Twice’er in Sea Point.

    Good luck!

Thanks Astrid, but it’s in California.

I have great news. I found Kool Waste; a service that picks up your recycleables (which don’t even have to be sorted) once a week. Barry is picking up our first load this Tuesday!

Thanks Lisa. What I have definitely found out is that all these amazing guys are so useless at advertising! It took me ages to find Kool Waste.
