Megan's Head

A place where Megan gets off her head.

And I mean where, not what? This is a review for Graham Clarke and his one man show The Devil and Billy Markham now on at The Kalk Bay Theatre.

Big Friendly and I went last night. We were 2 of 10 in the audience. The first half was performed in torch and candle-light during an Eskom load shed. Sheer performer hell handled by Graham with grace, charm and a little bitter irony that supported his masterful performance well.

WTF is everybody? How can a performer of this caliber and stature have this little support? How can a show get totally brilliant reviews and no audiences?

BM04 The show is a one man tour de force, in rhyming verse, telling the story of a gambling charmer Billy Markham and his endless deals with the devil. It is charming, crude, raunchy, musical, powerful, funny and clever. All 10 of us loved the show.

I just don’t get it. I just don’t get it. There is this week and next to catch this brilliant show. If you don’t believe me that it’s good, read Zane Henry‘s review. Don’t be a Capetonian and wake up in March shocked that you missed it.

Why so surprised? Is it the Lion King? Who wants to think about social values and conflict? Social Mistakes? Does the Lion King make one think?

    I love Graham’s work.
